Patients come to us from across the country, for specialist care they can't receive closer to home. As well as treating patients today, our experts are continually working on research for new therapies and treatment, working to understand the underlying causes of heart and lung diseases and find out how they can be beaten.

Case study: donations in action

At the age of only 24, Jason Pieterse had spent his life coping with chronic chest infections and virtually permanent intravenous therapy and hospitalization. He was accepted for a double lung transplant at Harefield in August 2009. The transplant appeared to have gone well, but his condition deteriorated quickly, and three days later he suffered a severe infection and his condition was critical. The only option was to place him on ECMO equipment to give his lungs the chance to rest and fight infection. But the new lungs failed, and he needed a second transplant less than 3 weeks after his first - he was finally discharged after 3 months in hospital.

The charity uses donations from people like you to help us buy state of the art medical equipment, such as the ECMO machine which helped Jason. Your donation will make a real difference to the lives of our patients, and the treatments we can offer to them.
