Why your donation matters
Gaining an education is a vital step towards a future free from poverty. Tanzania follows a secondary school syllabus almost identical to the UK, but they lack the resources to optimise pupils’ school careers. The average pupil to text book ratio is 5 to 1. Schools are generally under-funded and the state budget understandably prioritises teachers’ salaries. We work closely with the Ministry of Education to ensure that our books go to where they are most needed and to measure our efficacy and impact. Compare this to the UK where text books are routinely replaced – often after a lifecycle of only two or three years – and a natural demand and supply relationship emerges. Case study: donations in action
Ahmadi is an 18-year-old boy who attends Tunduru Secondary School in Ruvuma, Tanzania. He wants to be a District Commissioner. He and his sister were allowed to attend school however last month his sister became pregnant and had to drop out of school. His parents died recently and he lives with his elderly grandfather for whom he is the primary carer. The books READ International volunteers delivered this year will enable Ahmadi to achieve his dream. Despite a shortage of teachers Ahmadi is now preparing for his Standard 7 Exams using the books that we donated. This is his first step to achieving his dream and becoming a District Commissioner. A vital action that will help to lift his family out of poverty.
