Why your donation matters

The world of mental illness can be complex and confusing. That’s why our advice and information service means so much to people living with mental illness. Our highly trained advisors offer people very specialised advice. This crucial service receives no dedicated government funding, so it really does rely on the kindness of people like you. But over the last year, calls to our helpline have increased dramatically, and we’re now in the terrible position of having to turn people away. Without donations from people like you, hundreds of calls could go unanswered – and people will be left to cope with the strain of mental illness alone. We need to be there for everyone who needs us – but we can’t do this without you. Please make a gift today.

Case study: donations in action

“My son David is 37 years old, and to look at him, you wouldn’t think there was anything wrong. He’s extremely good-looking, intelligent and polite. But he’s also very ill. He’s had to be sectioned twice, and his illness means that he can’t hold down a job for very long. But he thinks there’s nothing wrong with him, so he refuses to take medication or go on benefits. When David lost his last job and incurred lots of debts, he came to me for money all the time. I’m on a pension, so I was going through money far too quickly. I was worried sick. That’s where Rethink Mental Illness came in. I went to one of their support groups, and someone suggested I call their advice service. Now we’ve got David on one benefit that gets paid directly to him, and another that gets paid into a trust account, in case he gets into debt again. It’s lifted a huge weight off my shoulders. If it wasn’t for Rethink Mental Illness, I don’t know where I would have been. And I can truthfully tell you that.”
