My story

Three teams of Ricardo UK cyclists braved atrocious conditions to relay-ride from MTC to STC in support of Acorns Children's Hospice on Sunday 6th July.

Despite constant rain and gusting winds of up to 30 mph, the winning STC/CaTC team (Eric Barbier, Geoff Frost, James McLaggan, Tom Vincent) completed the 140 mile course in only 7.5 hours. The MTC A-team (Mike Wheeler, Malcolm Smith, Simon Shepherd, Chris May) came frustratingly close to finally bringing the trophy to the midlands, but lost the sprint for the line by half a wheel length. Despite some imaginative interpretation of the route, the MTC-B team (Geoff Davis, David Shuttlewood, Gary Waite, Lloyd Storey) were ultimately thwarted by a costly navigational error, which required the intervention of neutral service (Dean Murden).

Chris May, event organiser, said "everyone made a fantastic effort in extremely challenging conditions and we should all be proud of ourselves and the valuable contribution we have made to Acorns Children's Hospice! The whole team would like to thank their sponsors and those who helped organise the event". Even though the event has been completed, the team are still some way short of their fundraising target and so would greatly appreciate additional contributions - further details can be found at www.justgiving.com/ricardocharitycycleride

The ride recreated events held previously from 2001 to 2003, which raised money for the Diana Princess of Wales Children's Hospital, Chestnut Tree House Children's Hospital and Myton Hospice. Rumours abound that the event will be run again without another five year hiatus and possibly when the sun is shining - please contact one of the team members if you are interested in taking part.
