UPDATE
We made it! Finally rode in to John O'Groats on Tuesday 4th November, just before 3pm. It was wet, misty and cold, but it didn't matter ... we'd set out to cycle 1000 miles for charity, and we had!
Background - why we are doing this ride
To cut to the chase, in October this year, we aim to cycle the near 1000 miles from Land's End to John O'Groats (LeJog), as a charity ride, to raise as much as we can for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Of course, many have cycled this route before, but for us it will be all the more challenging, as we both have physical disability. In 1994, Anthea was in a major car accident, and sustained a broken back and serious head trauma. Her life changed dramatically, she was forced to retire from teaching, and she has since learned to cope with the lasting effects of her injuries. In 2005 Richard was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and now suffers from greatly reduced mobility, severe fatigue, and unusually with MS, has become partially sighted and registered blind. This has meant he has had to retire from his career as a police officer.
So the only way to undertake this ride is on a tandem, and because of our physical conditions and the need for greater stability, we will be riding a specially designed tandem trike, with the two wheels at the front! We will set off from Land's End on the 1st October 2008, and aim to ride 35 - 50 miles a day, with frequent recovery stops! At this pace, we should make it up to John O'Groats by late October, with hopefully our sense of humour still intact! We hope you will feel inspired to sponsor us in this adventure, and help us to raise as much money as we can, to support the excellent ongoing work of the MS Society, and their funding of research into effective treatments and a cure for this debilitating condition.
A big thank you to all those who have sponsored us so far, your generosity is very much appreciated. We really would like to raise as much as we possibly can, and continue increasing our total ... so if you haven't yet sponsored us, and would like to ... please just click on the 'sponsor us now' button above, and help us raise even more. Can we also encourage you, if you feel able, to pass the link to our webpage on, to any friends and colleagues who you feel may be interested in supporting us in this charitable venture. Thank you!
(Donating through 'Justgiving' is quick, easy, and totally secure. It's also the most effective way to sponsor us: the MS Society gets your money faster and, if you're a UK taxpayer, 'Justgiving' makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement are added to your donation.)
So please sponsor us now, and may we thank you for your generosity.
