This page is dedicated to my mum, Doreen Coleman,  In July this year I  lost my mother to Ovarian Cancer, and I will be running for the first time, in the Hastings Half Marathon to raise much needed funds for the charity ‘The Eve Appeal’.

The Eve Appeal has been set up to raise as much awareness as possible to all Gynaecological Cancers, which of course Ovarian Cancer is.  Each year around 1 MILLION women are diagnosed with gynaecological Cancer world wide- 16,000 British Women are diagnosed with a form of gynaecological cancers each year.  In excess of 65% will die.

The Silent Killer - Ovarian Cancer- My Mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and within 2 weeks she died.  This may seem like a quick result from diagnoses to death but if you look at the statistics it really isn’t.  In Britain alone approximately 7,000 women are diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer and sadly each year 5,000 will have their lives cut short.

When Ovarian Cancer is detected in the advanced stages 85% of women will die, IF it is detected in the early stages 95% will survive.  The big IF, the reason 85% will die is there is so little known about gynaecological cancers and especially the SILENT KILLER- Ovarian Cancer, Most women (like my mum) do not even know they have it.  The symptoms are not obvious. I remember when she was diagnosed asking why she didn’t go earlier to the doctor she said she thought it was women’s trouble and another part of ‘the change’.  Maybe if she had gone 11 months earlier when she first felt different this would be one of those 95% success stories. But instead, I was called by my wife while I was playing cricket for my team Crowhurst Park Cricket Club, as was my elder brother, Laurence, to go home as something had happened to my mum. We both drove from Glynde back to our family home in Westfield, thinking the worst, hoping it was wrong and praying for her. Unfortunately the worst had happened and my wonderful mum had died at her home in my father’s arms.  After my mothers death, we learnt that my mother was at such an advanced stage with ovarian cancer that she would of never of been a 95% statistic, but others can be saved and   I decided then, this must never happen again and if my actions help to save just 1 life then running the 13 miles including Harley Shute Hill and Queensway will be worth it.

I miss my mum so much, she was not only a great women but a wonderful mum, she was always ready with a cup of tea and slice of cake, a real mums mum.

I know the Hastings Half Marathon is a way off (training already started) but I would like to get as much coverage and support as possible for the charity. Guess what Ovarian Cancer awareness month is March, coincidence????   I thank you again for your support and donation.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to donate: Eve Appeal will receive your money electronically and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in Gift Aid will be added to your donation at no cost to you.
