Right to Dream's vision is "to offer underprivileged children who are drawn from a background of extreme poverty, the opportunity to reach their true potential in life through sport and education." Our philosophy which underpins all out work in Africa, is to focus on empowering children who are drawn from a background of extreme poverty, teaching them the necessary values and skills, and providing them with the opportunties and experiences so that they can make a long-term, positive difference to their own lives, and those of their families and importantly their communities too.
We have established the Right to Dream Sports Academy (Ghana), the Right to Dream Underprivileged Children's Centre (UCC) (Ghana), and through partnership working we are also working to establish a Nationwide Football Development League (Sierra Leone) which uses the power of sport and education to achieve multiple social development objectives.
At Right to Dream we have identified the need to appoint a Teaching (specialist in Health)/ Development Officer for 2009-10 who can desgin, establish and deliever a comprehensive health education programme at our Academy and UCC in Ghana which will promote health and raise awareness of life saving health messages to our own pupils and the wider community through the power of peer education. Critically, this programme will be able to run year round and will in the future be delivered by locally trained staff and replicated in all new Right to Dream Academies established across Africa.
In addition, as a small NGO the urgent need exists for assistance in all areas of teaching (especially specialist remedial and Science) at the Academy and in the ongoing development of our Foundation as we use 2009-2010 to construct our new academy facilities in Ghana (we currently rent our existing site), expand our programme to benefit even more underprivileged children, and work to implement our plan of achieving self-sustainability. This will be achieved in challenging economic environment within the context of very restrictive budgets. At this time, whilst there is a clear need for this role, there are no funds to meet this need; this position can only be made a reality through fundraising. The costs of supporting Julia in this Teaching/Development role for one year are £5000. This would cover the costs of living expenses, purchasing of specialist resources and travel between projects.
In short, any donation made towards the costs of this position would be very gratefully received and will enable us to put in place a sustainable health education programme with the potential of reaching 40,000 children with life saving health messages, which would then be replicated in our work across Africa as we establish more academies. We hope you are enthused as we are at this opportunity to expand our work and will consider favourably this request for support.
