My story

On Thursday 28th May 2009 Tony Stott and SCOTT UK Northern Sales Manager Keith Murray take on an epic journey: They will ride unsupported from Zeebrugge in Belgium to a Alicante Spain. Their journey will take them through Belgium, France, Andorra and the heart of Spain.

Most racing cyclists fly to Benidorm for an early season training camp, but Tony and Keith have decided that their training camp for 2009 will be to ride there!

Their ride is all in aid of the Geoff Thomas Cancer Research Foundation. The choice of charity to support with this ride was a very easy decision for the team. Geoff is now a keen cyclist having twice ridden the route of the Tour de France following his own personal battle with Leukaemia, he's also an ex an Wolverhampton Wanderers & England Footballer!!

In late 2005 Tony was diagnosed with advanced bowel cancer. Tony says, "Like so many men I ignored warning signs for a long time before seeking advice mainly because my fitness levels did not appear affected and I was more interested in getting on with the racing."

It was a salutary lesson, therefore, to be diagnosed and told, particularly as a bike rider, that his only option was major surgery and a permanent colostomy. He sought a second opinion desperate not to have the colostomy, for obvious reasons. As luck would have it he was introduced to a Professor Monson, based in Hull, who had some sympathy with cyclists having worked at the Mayo Clinic in USA where Lance Armstrong received treatment.

Monson thought there was a good chance he could perform the major surgery with the benefit of a temporary colostomy whilst Tony healed internally with thereafter the 'tubes' being rejoined to put him back to normal.' A process of intensive radiation treatment and chemo followed in mid 2006. Tony had the surgery  done in September with the temporary colostomy removed in early 2007. To date there has been no recurrence and hopefully this will continue for the next couple of years when Tony can get the all clear.

Tony and Keith are hoping that this epic ride will capture the imagination of many people enabling them to raise a good sum for the Geoff Thomas Foundation for Cancer Research.
