My story

Rock of Ages exists because Isaac Mwewe, a young Zambian pastor, had a vision to provide children in the area with pre-primary education, to enable them to qualify for primary school.  In this shanty compound, on waste ground too contaminated to grow crops, Isaac, along with local residents, physically dug up stones and, as and when they could afford bags of cement, made blocks by hand and built the 'Rock of Ages' building.  Disaster struck in 2008 when heavy rains caused most of the walls to collapse.  Through generous donations from UK and elsewhere, funds were raised to provide a concrete floor, some benches and tables and a corrugated iron roof (see photo) and to demolish the old walls and replace them with kiln-fired bricks on proper foundations.  About 1/3 of the walls have been completed (October 2009) but funds are still desperately needed to purchase more bricks, cement and labour, as well as the ongoing costs of basic teaching materials and token “payments” to the teachers. As well as the children’s education, Isaac's full vision is, in due course, to train local adults to provide work skills and income to ensure the project becomes self-sustaining.  Please help us to help him help them!  Funds are needed now for:

bricks, cement and labour to finish the new walls

   exercise books, pencils and chalk

   teacher training

teaching materials and resources for children and adults

   'long drop' toilet

investigation into the long term tenure of the site.
