Story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.

My aim is to raise money so that one or more people from one of the poorer areas of the world and who are in conflict now or are recovering from past conflict are supported to come and study Movement Medicine and eventually become teachers of this work. The money raised will be used to provide help for travel and accommodation.  The tuition will either be subsidised by the School or in some cases be provided free of charge.

I am doing a walk from the Lizard, which is the most southerly point on mainland Britain, to the Island of Iona, off the West coast of Scotland.  This is in many ways a personal pilgrimage in honour of my father, who died ten years ago, and on the walk I am visiting many places that were important to him including the homes of his 4 children and many places where he lived or worked.  I actually began this walk two years ago and have completed about half of it. This year I aim to complete the rest and estimate that I have about 41 walking days to do and I aim to arrive on Iona, where my father’s ashes are scattered, on the 17th September '09 which is the tenth anniversary of his death.

I will be walking for 4 days in February from near where my father used to live in North Oxfordshire to Market Harborough.  Here is a short film of the first day of that walk.  Done with two friends - Cathy and Hilary http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_F0IUHWpSvQ

Then I will do a two week stint in March from Market Harborough to my brother’s house in Huddersfield.  I have already completed the next section which covers the Pennine Way up to Co. Durham where one of my sisters lives.  So in June I will walk from her house and rejoin the Pennine way and follow it to it’s Northern end just over the border in Scotland and then on over Southern Scotland to Glasgow.  The final stint, from Glasgow up the West Highland Way and then West to the Isle of Mull and finally to Iona, I will do in September.  I will post updates on my progress on the website here.

I am of course paying for all my own expenses and all the money raised will go to the Sponsorship Fund.  My primary aim of doing this walk is personal.  However, I hope that this fact will not deter you from giving generously to the Fund and allowing this wonderful work to spread to areas of the world where it would not otherwise get to. I also hope it will inspire others to find ways of raising money for the fund. Raising money for causes, such as providing support for the Kogi people of Columbia, has become an important part of the Movement Medicine ethos and is now integral to some workshops such as For All Our Relations and the Apprenticeship Programme.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: School of Movement Medicine Sponsorship Fund gets your money faster and, if you’re a taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

Thanks for reading and for supporting this project.

About the charity

It supports people worldwide who are working or living on the 'front line' by providing scholarships to help pay for travel and accommodation to do Movement Medicine workshops, in order to provide them with personal re-sourcing and teacher training so Movement Medicine can become available to their communities.
