Romy died in the evening of April 29, 2011 in The Hospice in the Weald, Pembury, Kent. She was the perfect wife, mother, mother-in-law and granny.
Romy was diagnosed with a choroidal melanoma back in Sept 2010 and with a secondary cancer in her liver; metastatic melanoma is currently untreatable. After a good few months carrying on as "normal" and enjoying the company of family and friends, she fell ill a couple of weeks ago. Her decline was rapid but pain free. Typically of Romy, she remained positive and calm to the end, more concerned about Alfie than herself.
She chose The Hospice in the Weald and we are extremely grateful to them for the care and comfort they provided to her and us during her last few days. Alfie, Sally and I are very keen to support the work they do for the community.
The Hospice provides specialist palliative care advice and clinical support for people with life limiting illness, their family and the bereaved. The Hospice, with only 17 beds, serves a community of approximately 300,000 over an area of 400 square miles of West Kent and East Sussex. No charge is made for their services, which are provided on the basis of need rather than ability to pay. The Hospice is a charity, dependent on the community to fund its essential work which requires annual donations of £4.5M - the Government contribution of 11% of these costs is only around half that afforded to other adult hospices.
