Update, Sunday 6th Sept 2009, please scroll down:
On 5th September this year, I will be taking part in the Vitruvian Triathlon around Rutland Water, Leicestershire. This event consists of a 1.2 mile swim, 52 mile cycle and 13 mile run, and whilst I have competed in many races and endurance events up to and including marathon distance over the last 20 years, most while serving in the Royal Marines, this will be my 1st triathlon and one of the hardest physical challenges that I will have taken part in.
One of the reasons I decided to take on this challenge is because earlier this year my Brother-in-Law Tony, a firefighter with Cheshire Fire Service passed away after being diagnosed with cancer at the ripe old age of....36! During his last few months with us he had been recieving care, treatment and support from the nurses at Macmillan Cancer Support. It is a tribute to them that those last few months were made as comfortable as possible.
Having witnessed some of the treatment and care they have provided to Tony and his family, I have felt compelled to do my bit and raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support in order that they can continue to provide this excellent service, not only for Tony, but also to the thousands of other unfortunate people that succumb to this dreadful disease.
I will undoubtedly suffer some pain and discomfort during the triathlon, however, this is nothing compared to the pain and suffering that people affected by cancer go through on a daily basis!
Sunday 6th Sept 2009: I take great pleasure in reporting that I completed the Vitruvian yesterday finishing 328th out of approx 1000 in a time of 5hrs 14mins...a whole 30 minutes inside my predicted and expected time of 5.45-6hrs!! :-)) And yes....I did experience pain & discomfort but it was all well worth it!!
I'd just like to say a HUGE thankyou to all of you who sponsored me, your donations really will help to make a big difference to all at Macmillan Cancer Support.
Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.
This fundraising page will be active until 5th December 2009, so if you know of anyone who hasn't yet made a donation but would like to, please urge them to sponsor me now! :-)
Thanks again, Rory
