My story
For the 2011 Project for Awesome I'm aiming to raise £1,000 for The Stroke Association. I know it's quite an ambitious target but every little helps and this cause is particularly important to me as my dad unexpectedly had a stroke in July of this year and passed away a couple of days afterwards. The Stroke Association funds research into stroke prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, stroke support and service provision as well as doing other great things like campaigning against changes to benefits that will have a serious effect on stroke survivors and those who care for them.
Additionally, The Stroke Association is a very useful resource for information about the various kinds of strokes; the clear and informative fact sheets were invaluable help to me when I was thousands of miles away from everything going on at home and I desperately wanted to find out more without having to deal with unreliable or sensationalist websites -- when I came across The Stroke Association it was clear to me that they knew what they were talking about.
I really appreciate any donations you can give and thank you for your time (as well as for visiting my justgiving page)! x R
From The Stroke Association website:
Every year an estimated 150,000 people in the UK have a stroke. Of all people who suffer from a stroke, about a third are likely to die within the first 10 days, about a third are likely to make a recovery within one month and about a third are likely to be left disabled and needing rehabilitation.
Stroke has a greater disability impact than any other medical condition. A quarter of a million people are living with long-term disability as a result of stroke in the UK.
A bit about JustGiving: Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
