Musequality, founded in May 2007, sets up and supports music projects for some of the poorest children in the developing world. Our aim is not to produce professional musicians but to give vulnerable children the chance to learn skills – such as self-confidence, problem-solving, numeracy and goal-setting – and build a sense of identity that will give them a route out of poverty and away from the risks of drug culture, violence and crime. My story

On 9 June I left my house with a backpack, fiddle and completely empty wallet at the start of a 'round-the-world busk' in aid of Musequality, a charity that supports music projects for some of the poorest children in the developing world.

Musequality's work is about far more than helping children develop a gift that they and their communities will enjoy for a lifetime. There is a large and consistent body of evidence showing that children receiving regular music lessons improve more quickly across a wide range of skills than those receiving no music education. As well being a cost-effective means of delivering educational benefits, music projects offer an arena in which children, many of whom lack a stable family environment, can develop the social skills, discipline and self-esteem that will equip them to face life's wider challenges.

If it is to have a secure future, the developing world needs qualified and able teachers, doctors, lawyers, farmers, as well as responsible social and business leaders. If it is to have those people in the future, it needs - today - to have young people with the skills, strength of mind and self-confidence to believe they can, with hard work, fulfil those and other important roles. Musequality's goal is to help children discover those qualities within themselves.
