Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am taking part in the Bupa Great Manchester 10K Run for the Alzheimer's Society in memory of my wife's Grandmother Ada Abraham, who lived and coped with Alzheimer's disease for many years.

Dementia is a disease that is affecting more and more people as we live longer with the ageing population. It robs a person of their ability to remember, understand, communicate, to reason, to be there, to be the person they once were. Long term memories stay for a while, its the last to go, its short term that goes first. You suddenly find you can not do things that you used to be able to do, make a cup of tea, tie your shoe laces, locking the front door.

The person you knew and loved becoming someone else. When it happens to a person that you love it makes a huge impact on your life. You've lost a loved one, but nobody's died.

One of the hardest decisions the family had to make was to place Ada  in 24 hour care once it became apparent that she could not safely remain in her own home. It was extremely distressing and difficult time for both Ada and the family as she constantly asked "Am I staying here? When are you taking me home" until the memory of home had dwindled.

Not long after moving to 24 hour care she suffered 2 strokes, which left her unable to walk, and to be able to only move bed to chair with assistance of carers.  Due to her dementia she often forgot she could no longer walk and therefore was at even greater risk for falling and needing constant care and supervision.

Sadly Ada passed away, peacefully with her daughter by her side on 17th March 2014.

Thankfully, the Alzheimer's disease had not progressed enough that Ada had not lost the ability to recognise her relatives, especially her daughter, which was comfort in her passing. Some families who affected by Alzheimer's are not so lucky.

Raising over £200 will help the Alzheimer's Society reach their fund raising target for 2014. Your contribution will make a difference helping both suffers and their families make the most of their life and create some happy memories, making this disease a little more bearable.
