Back in May, clearly under the influence of too much sun and sangria I decided that what I really needed to cool me down was a visit to Scotland. Therefore I agreed that on Sunday 4th October I would, with our old friend and neighbour Fiona, take part in the Baxters River Ness 10k Run, in Inverness, Scotland to raise money for The Autism Trust.
I know that we all get a lot of requests to give to charities and to sponsor friends and relatives for various worthy causes, but I would really appreciate you giving this one a moment of your time. Fiona´s younger son Gregor is autistic, and attending a school for children with autism. The school is excellent and he is doing very well.
However, like all parents of children with autism, their greatest concern is what will happen to Gregor once he leaves school at 19. He will always be autistic of course, and the sad fact is that today in the UK, only 6% of adults with autism even have a job. Most are condemned to a life of unemployment and living with their parent carers. This should not be the only inevitable option for children like Gregor.
The Autism Trust is a charity that aims to do something about it. Their goal is to build a network of centres for adults with autism, where they can learn skills, work in various occupations, and live in safe communities designed to enable them to lead productive and happy lives.
More details on The Autism Trust, and what they are trying to do, are on my fund-raising page on the Just Giving website, which you can go to by clicking here:
