On 24 May I made it!!!. I finished in just over 3
hours and 56 minutes - so just came in on target in
under 4 hours.
I have only been running seriously for the last 12 months and completed the Norwich half marathon in November 2008 in just over 1 hour and 52minutes. I have never run a marathon, so just completing it will be a great achievement, but I am hoping to complete it in under 4 hours.
My father, Mike, was diagnosed with Advanced Kidney Cancer in November 2006, so I have witnessed firsthand the impact that the disease can have on people’s lives.
Every year almost 6,200 people in the UK learn that they have kidney cancer. That's over 16 people a day. And yet the condition - the tenth most common cancer among men - rarely attracts much public attention. The mission at the James Whale Fund is to try and change that.
The James Whale fund has played a vital role in heightening the profile of Kidney cancer and campaigning for the NHS funding of the new drugs for the treatment of advanced forms of the disease. A number of new drugs have been identified that can temporarily halt the progress of advanced kidney cancer and more than double life expectancy compared to standard treatments, this can significantly improve the quality of life for patients.
After a long battle from the fund and many patients including my father, these new drugs are now available through all NHS trusts, giving hope for a better quality of life and a longer life. When first diagnosed, my father was given only 6 months to live but due to this new drug (Sutent) he is still with us 2 years on!!
