About Sense Scotland
Sense Scotland is a leader in the field of communication and innovative support services for people who are marginalized because of challenging behaviour, health care issues and the complexity of their support needs.
Communication is essential to us all. Imagine not being able to ask or answer questions, say how you feel, ask for "help" or say "I've hurt myself". Think of the difficulties in learning, making friends, even bonding with parents. Think of the isolation.
Sense Scotland can help children communicate by building up a tactile language. However, the charity needs to provide the much needed specialised equipment, musical instruments and toys which encourage deafblind children to express themselves.
Our history
Sense Scotland's roots go back to a small group of parents which first met in 1977 so that they could make a difference for their deafblind sons and daughters.
Their actions led the development of services for deafblind people in Scotland and in 1985 their determination was formalised with the appointment of the first Scottish Officer.
The aspirations and experiences of parents, with their continuing advice and involvement, have been crucial to the growth and direction of Sense Scotland.
One third of Sense Scotland's governing body, must be parents. It is their energy and determination which has shaped policy and services. Their close involvement gives staff a solid base on which to develop and provide appropriate services.
