In 2005, as part of the Pets as Therapy scheme, I began taking our wonderful dog, Cora, to St Raphael's Hospice.   Until shortly before she died in October 2009, together we were in the privileged position of spending time with those patients who wanted us to visit both in the wards and in the day centre.  The pleasure the patients got from seeing Cora and stroking her was tangible.
In addition, it gave me an insight into the exceptional and loving care provided by the staff and supporters of the Hospice, described so well by Sister Lina as "kindness in words creates confidence, kindness in thinking creates profoundness, and kindness in giving creates love".
In appreciation of the kindness, compassion and understanding which abounds at St Raphael's and as a tribute to Cora, I am going to walk 100 + miles of Offa's Dyke, supported by Anthony.  The path is 177 miles in length and we plan to do at least 100 miles of it in the fortnight before Easter.
St Raphael's only receives a quarter of its costs from the NHS and has to raise £3 million a year from fund raising.  All care offered by St Raphael's and its community team is free of charge.
