As you probably know, we will be volunteering in South Africa this summer with Be More, a fantastic charity that supports grassroots HIV/AIDS work throughout the country.
For a month, we will be working at the Agape Children's Home outside Durban. You may be familiar with the multi-award winning film, "We Are Together", which documents the lives of several children at Agape and their famous choir (see the Youtube trailer below)
As a volunteer, we will be able to contribute to the daily life at Agape, a children's home that accommodates 40-70 children.
Thanks to the generous support of those who attended our Canadian fundraiser, we have covered the cost of staying at Agape for a month.
We are now raising money directly for Agape. Ninety per cent of what you donate will go directly to Agape; the other 10 per cent will be donated to Be More, which supports more than 15 other charities in South Africa (www.bemore.org).
Recently, contributions from volunteers have gone towards funding:
-a counsellor to visit Agape once a week
-a "quiet room" where the children can speak to the counsellor in private
-sewing machines and sewing lessons (and a fashion show!)
-clothes, books, school supplies, toys and birthday presents
Anything you can give will be greatly appreciated! We will have a say in how a large portion of the funds raised will be spent, so the money will be put to the best possible use:)
