Why your donation matters
The Inherited Cardiac Conditions Service is an innovative service at the Northern General Hospital to help tackle the problem of inherited heart conditions. The nurse-led service aims to identify life threatening heart disorders at an early stage. This early screening can help save lives.
The Charity has funded the post of a third specialist nurse to work in the service, meaning that the service can now deal with more patients.
Christine Loukes, one of the patients who has benefitted from the service, says “The Inherited Cardiac Conditions Service has been fantastic. The specialist nurses are always on the end of the phone if I have a problem or I’m worried about anything."
This is just one example of how we work to improve the treatment and care of patients. Help us to do more.
Case study: donations in action
23-year-old Michael was born with Cystic Fibrosis, one of the UK’s most common life-threatening inherited diseases which can make breathing and digesting food more difficult.
People with the condition are more susceptible to infections and often need to stay in hospital for several weeks at a time to help them recover from illnesses. So to help patients like Michael the Charity has provided £1 million to help build a new state-of-the-art facility for Cystic Fibrosis patients.
“It's not nice going into hospital. I’m normally there for weeks rather than days and it does get quite depressing. Now the new unit is open, my parents don’t have to worry as much and don't feel the pressure to have to come and see me every day, because they know I’m happier and busier. The new unit gives us back some independence and control over our condition and treatment. It doesn't feel like they're taking everything away from you when you get admitted to hospital.”
