On Sunday 10/10/10, the sun shone, a hooter sounded and the Leicester half marathon began amongst the leafy greenness of Victoria Park. I set off a very steady plod – much more tortoise than hare – happy to be overtaken by the keen athletes.
The crowd of supporters thinned out quickly as we headed (downhill) out along the Belgrave Rd, to the amusement of a few local shoppers. Then North, up the dual carriageway, turning off at Thurmaston, where a few more village supporters turned out to cheer us on. As the full marathon runners continued towards Gaddesby, we ‘halfers’ ran back through a beautiful Watermead Country Park – again to the bemusement of those out walking their dogs and children!
At 11 miles I found it tough, and confess to the odd brisk
walk! However I carried on back to the
city centre, past John Lewis and a faithful few supporters, for the final drag
back to the park – obviously uphill!
Philip, Louis and Mia were there to encourage/drag me up the final mile, and I crossed the line at 2h 41m 33s. Yes I had come in at number 1992!! Not bad I thought – at least there were still 67 people after me – and I proudly received my banana and medal.
The best news is that I will have raised over £1500 for Breast Cancer Care – and I thank you all for your great support. If anyone would still like to donate, there is timeI did it! Spurred on by all your support. It was a beautiful day in many different ways. Thank you
