My story

 

I have been totally inspired by the work of  Opportunity International over the last few months as it doesn't just  'give out'  money ... But ... Instead it 'loans' money to empower women living in chronic poverty to start up their own business.

To support the charity I'm treking to Namche Bazaar .. About half way to Everest Base Camp over 12 nights .. Will update you on my (painful) progress from March 12th! ...

...What  has inspired me the most and is impressive to see, is that through their own hard work and succes their lives are completly changed, from living in slums and on the streets, to having the chance to be in better housing, have healthier diets and most importantly they are able to send their children to school instead of them begging on the streets ...

As the money is lent to a group of women ... Usually, about 15, they have a collective responsibility to pay back the loan, this creates a high level of trust and mutual respect and consequently the loan return rates are on average an impressive 98%, enabling the charity to keep using the money over and over again to help even more people ..

I've spent the last week with the team's in Delhi and Chennai and have been able to see for myself how dignity, hope and pride are all possible through giving these amazing entrepreneurial women a chance ...

Just 40.00 pounds, is all it takes to give a chance of a better life for her and her family
