I was born on Friday 16 April 2010 and on Saturday 11 December, just eight months old, I was admitted to Leighton Hospital, Crewe feeling very poorly and with a temperature of 40 degrees. After being diagnosed with tonsillitis I was sent home.

The next day, Sunday 12 December, my Mummy and Daddy took me back to hospital as I had started to feel even more poorly. As it turned out, I was so ill that even the doctors and nurses at Leighton Hospital couldn’t help me and I had to be transferred to the intensive care unit at Alder Hey Hospital, Liverpool. At the time the doctors thought I had something called ‘Strep A’ but it later turned out I also had Swine Flu. However, it wasn’t as simple as putting me in an ambulance and sending me to Alder Hey as my little body had gone into ‘Toxic Shock’ and was in the process of shutting down completely. A specialist team from the North West Transport Service (NWTS) had to be called in at 4am in the morning and it took them nearly ten hours to stablise me and prepare me for the journey to Liverpool.

The NWTS was only set up in November 2010 and is made up of a dedicated team of paediatricians, doctors and nurses who transport very ill children throughout the North of England and Wales to specialist hospitals like Alder Hey. There is no doubt that these wonderful people, along with the doctors and nurses of the Alder Hey Intensive Care unit saved my life and I shall always be grateful to them.

The bed that was used to transfer me was like a ‘high-tech pod on wheels’ and each one of these costs around £60,000. The breathing machine alone, which is part of the bed, costs £20,000. On top of this, I’ve since found out that it costs around ‘£2,500 a day’ for a child to be treated in the Intensive Care unit and I was looked after in there for 10 days.

My Mummy has spoken to the NWTS team to thank them for saving my life and to see what we can do to help fund this new service. They need a breathing machine for one of the beds and they want to expand their service to include training for doctors and nurses in hospitals around the North West in how to deal with poorly children who go into hospital with my symptoms. They need training ‘Manikins’ to carry out this work, but only have one at the moment and they each cost around £28,000.

So, my first goal is to raise £20,000 for a breathing machine and with the help of all my family and friends we aim to achieve this within 12 months. Thank you for all your help in supporting me to reach my goal for this fantastic cause and I’ll keep you updated on the progress of our fund-raising.

All my love,

Sienna Lilly x
