My story

My name is Simon Perry. I’m a 28 year old postman and in the past few years both my parents’ lives have been claimed by lung cancer.

Chris, my dad, died in 2001, aged 54. Throughout his 13 week illness, he was nursed and cared for by my mum. Looking back, at only 20, I can see that my mum did her best to protect and shelter me from what was happening, and yet I knew enough to hope that nothing as awful as this would happen to my family again.

Unfortunately, Hazel, my mum, died in 2008, aged 61. Her seemingly short 10 week illness felt like a never-ending forever and it became increasingly difficult for me, family and friends to give Hazel the 24 hour care she needed. St Wilfrid’s Hospice admitted Hazel, for what would turn out to be her last days. The doctors, nurses and volunteers were very helpful and supportive.

I’m running theBeachy Headmarathon in memory of my parents, Chris and Hazel Perry. They were fabulous people who suffered unnecessarily unpleasant deaths. I’m young, fit and healthy, and determined to complete the marathon to raise money for St Wilfrid’s Hospice, so that they can continue their good work for others.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: St Wilfrid's Hospice (Eastbourne) Ltd gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
