Story

Dear All

Serving in both the Regular Army and the TA for a number of years was a life-forming experience for me, but was nothing compared with what our young service men and women are currently experiencing in Afghanistan and Iraq.  Their time 'in theatre' and at the 'sharp end' is given largely without complaint and they are separated from family and friends for protracted periods. Some return home injured and maimed and the very least we can do as civilians is to ensure that they have the necessary support, and in particular, medical backup, when things go wrong.

It is their unselfish commitment that has encouraged me off the sofa and heading for the hills of Wiltshire, sweating heavily, on my bicycle.  350 odd miles will undoubtedly be a challenge, so I am embracing as much technology as I can.  I have bought, for the first time, a cycling helmet and have taken advantage of an extremely generous offer of the loan of a fantastic Moulton 'Double Pylon' bicycle (see photo).  Built just down the road in Bradford-on-Avon, these bikes have redefined bicycle design.  They may have smaller wheels and look a little different, but having now ridden one, I can vouch for their amazing speed, lightness and control.

I very much hope that you will be able to sponsor me and support this incredibly worthwhile cause.  If you would like to read more about the ride itself, please visit the website www.helpforheroes.org.uk where you will be able to read all about this extraordinary event.

Thank you for your support.
