We're volunteering in India on 2 important projects for the Asian Foundation for Philanthropy (AFP) to inspire social change:
- 1. From October 11th, we're going completely rural as we move to a remote village, Amarpurkashi, (Uttar Pradesh - the poorest state in India). Luckily for you, you won't hear from us for a while! We're helping the village fight a gangster-run paper factory which has ravaged their environment with intense air, land and soil pollution. We will be grateful for any support you could give in aid of our move because...
- 2. Currently we're in outer Bangalore working for Vidyanikethan, an NGO which runs a school for children saved from labour occupations. The school is in desparate need of sponsorship after recently losing their biggest donor.
We've been impressed by the recent rapid development in India. However, we're volunteering because of the ever widening gap between the rich and the poor. The spread of wealth is dangerously uneven, to the extent that the number of million-/billionaires will continue to grow at the expense of the millions of Indians stuck in a cycle of poverty and deprivation. We want to highlight the social issues that India continues to face despite rapid economic growth, ensuring that no one is left behind.
