My story

As you may already know, we''ve recently left the comforts of London, and in the interest of fairness and equality, we're taking our wisdom to the other side of the world!

We're volunteering in India on 2 important projects for the Asian Foundation for Philanthropy (AFP) to inspire social change:

  1. 1. From October 11th, we're going completely rural as we move to a remote village, Amarpurkashi, (Uttar Pradesh - the poorest state in India). Luckily for you, you won't hear from us for a while! We're helping the village fight a gangster-run paper factory which has ravaged their environment with intense air, land and soil pollution. We will be grateful for any support you could give in aid of our move because...
  2. 2. Currently we're in outer Bangalore working for Vidyanikethan, an NGO which runs a school for children saved from labour occupations. The school is in desparate need of sponsorship after recently losing their biggest donor.
  3. We really hope that you can help us support Vidyanikethan and their students but appreciate the difficulties in the current economic climate.

Through www.justgiving.com/slumdogwannabes all donations (incl. government gift aid) go directly to AFP and Vidyanikethan - so no chance of us sneaking some extra cash for the rest of our jollies!
OR if you're interested in sponsoring a child's education for just 5000Rupees/year (approx. GBP65) then please message us for more information through Facebook, hineshmehta@gmail.com or srgandhi87@gmail.com.

Any donation would be a massive help as a little can go a long way, but if that's not enough good karma, then we cordially invite you to visit us in Amarpurkashi from 11th October. It's only a flight to Delhi, a bus to the train station, a 5 hour train journey to a nearby town, and 1 hour by jeep to the village (the only car useable on the 'roads'). If you are planning on coming, please let us know - Samir is desparate for a KFC, his Leeds shirt back and Costco. Hinesh misses properly constructed roads and buildings.

We've been impressed by the recent rapid development in India. However, we're volunteering because of the ever widening gap between the rich and the poor. The spread of wealth is dangerously uneven, to the extent that the number of million-/billionaires will continue to grow at the expense of the millions of Indians stuck in a cycle of poverty and deprivation. We want to highlight the social issues that India continues to face despite rapid economic growth, ensuring that no one is left behind.

Please spare some time to find out more information about AFP, our involvement in education, and the work of Vidyanikethan:

For further or more detailed information about any of our projects, please contact us through Facebook, hineshmehta@gmail.com or srgandhi87@gmail.com

Thank you again for all your support and if we make it out alive we'll see you on the other side...
