Childbirth is painful and difficult at the best of times, when the life of both mother and child can be in danger. In Swat, medical facilities for women are either inadequate or non-existent, e.g. many pregnant women have to give birth in makeshift tents, sometimes on their own. Desperate and exposed, some women have been known to give birth on the open road, as they are unable to get to distant hospitals in time. Islamic Help, with its longstanding track record of work in , has unveiled plans to build , which will specialise in maternity and medical services for thousands of women and babies, reducing the risks of childbirth and improving their chances of survival.
