Story

It is now 6 years since I moved back to Edinburgh and began working with Amica. Initially I went to volunteer to finish up my pregnancy crisis counselling course, and somehow ended up working there. It's been lovely to combine my work experience in Community Education with my studies of women's health which I did as part of my Health Science degree.

In March 2009, I took on the role of manager of the centre with Sarah who was one of our volunteers at the time. We've worked together for four years now, and this summer she'll be leaving. Before that we hope to fundraise for Amica with a sponsored spacehop on Saturday 13th July 2013.

Working for Amica has meant a lot of sacrifices, but I do it because I really believe in the work we do. Our centre is unique because of the passion of our staff (most of whom work on a voluntary basis) and the fact we offer all our services to clients completely free of charge. Our centre is a safe space for people to come to in their time of crisis or grief, where they'll be listened to, not judged or pushed into any kind of decision and treated as a whole person.

At 17, I wish I had known about Amica. I wish there'd been an Amica when I was at university - not just for me, but for many friends who had scares, crisis pregnancies, struggled after miscarriages or terminations and didn't know what to do or where to turn. I have since had many friends who (secretly) have told me they wish they'd seen our leaflets or a poster in a doctor's waiting room when they could have benefitted from support Amica offers.

Right now, most centres are seeing declining numbers. Amica's client sessions have increased every year since 2009.

Here are the facts since 2009:

-our running costs have increased due to inflation and VAT rises and new training from the Open College Network for staff.

-the number of client sessions we are doing has increased every year

-the funding available is reducing every year

Funding is always an issue for us. Pregnancy loss (particularly termination) is a hugely stigmatised and taboo topic. It is whispered about rather than openly discussed. Without the generosity of others like you, our centre will not be able to continue running and yet our numbers show we are very much wanted and needed by our clients.

£392 could pay for a staff member to do the pregnancy choices practitioner training.

£100 could pay for a mail out to all the GPs in Edinburgh so they each have a poster in their waiting room.

£60 could pay for a lesson in a local secondary school.

£35 could pay for a family to get new cot mattress.

£1 could pay for someone to get a pregnancy test.
