I'm running the London Marathon this year for the Central London branch of the Samaritans. The Samaritans offer confidential, non-judgemental, emotional support to anyone who needs it. Samaritans has branches all over the UK. The London Branch is open 24 hours a day to answer phones, send texts and emails and see callers in person. The branch is staffed by over 400 volunteers and is funded entirely though charitable donations. £1800 is enough to cover the costs of running the branch for one day. I can vouch for the incredible work the Samaritans do, quietly, every day of the year.   

As I'm sure you're all aware I'm not a natural athlete and running the marathon will be a huge challenge for me. I'm already finding the training tough and it's only January! I've also stopped smoking as part of this endeavour (as of 1 Jan 2007) which is undoubtedly making the running easier but the challenge as a whole all the harder!
