In 2010 I will be working for Students Partnership Worldwide (SPW), a charity working worldwide to support young people facing serious health, education and/or environmental problems. SPW’s youth-led programmes reach more than 400,000 young people every week and are cited as an example of best practice by UNICEF, UNAIDS, and the World Bank for their unique methodology. SPW are invited by national governments (health/education boards) to set-up sustainable, reliable programmes which address imminent and long-term issues in health, education and environment.
I have been placed on the Uganda programme and will be working as part of SPW's community-based Youth Empowerment Programme. I will be trained by SPW and their Ugandan team before and during my 8 month placement and will work either on the Sexual Reproductive Health or on the Livelihoods issues. These programmes are implemented within rural communities, the former mainly educating children (in and out of school) and the latter working mainly with farmers in local communities improving yields and economically sustainable practices.
SPW use both formal (classroom teaching/official meetings) and non-formal (drama/dance/music/sport) teaching techniques allowing for diverse learning methods and a wider audience. I aim to set up extra curricular music activities and bands within schools and the local community. We will work on songs and hope to record them to make a CD which may be used to raise further funds for the programmes in place and for future volunteers. I also hope to organize some small scale community festivals and concerts to spread awareness of SPW's work, message and to help the children and adults involved to gain confidence through music and performance.
Volunteers are required to raise a minimum of £3,600 by December 2009. This money is used to fund SPW's projects. I would like to raise more than the required amount in order to buy instruments and basic recording equipment so that future volunteers and locals can continue the work that we start in 2010.
In order to do so, I have set up this fundraising page which allows you to donate quickly and easily. In addition to this I will be holding events such as raffles, drinks and concerts. Together with some good friends we have also decided to start an artistic collective named 'SHPOPS'. We will be releasing a CD which showcases the work of people we have grown up with. It will feature many different musical genres and allow you to hear what all those people that you have lost touch with are up to now! The CD will be designed, produced, promoted and sold by 'SHPOPS' so keep your ears and eyes open for the release date (August/Sept 2009). All proceeds go towards the Uganda project.
Thank you for your interest and for your donation!
