My story

What is Walk for Whales?

As divers and keen marine conservationists, we will be taking part in a 5 mile, fun, family walk in order to raise donations for the WDCS to help stop commercial whaling. The walk is taking place on Sunday 8th July starting at 12.30pm from the SEA LIFE London Aquarium, passing some of London’s most famous sites such as the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace and of course the EDF Energy London Eye. A great way to get noticed (especially as some of us will be in fancy dress) and raise awareness of the plight of whales and dolphins.

Why Walk for Whales?

· Both commercial whaling and international trade in whale products are currently banned. However, Japan, Norway and Iceland, together kill over 2000 whales each year and are expanding their international trade in whale products.

· Since the world ban on whaling in 1986 over 30, 000 whales have been destroyed. Whales are long living and slow to reproduce and therefore could never be sustainably fished.

· There is no humane way to kill a whale at sea; they are chased down and shot at with harpoons and rifles, often taking a long time to die whilst in a lot of pain.

· The WDCS are a leading charity in whale and dolphin conservation and have been around since 1987. They have projects here in the UK as well as funding projects all around the globe! Acting as a world voice for the protection of whales and dolphins the WDCS strive to defend these amazing creatures against the many threats that they face such as pollution, entanglement in fishing nets, climate change, captivity, ship collisions and of course, whaling.

WDCS’s reasons are simple; cruelty is unreasonable, extinction is forever!
