Just an update:
We were very lucky on the 18th - it didn't snow! The night itself was fairly mild though I cannot explain how unpleasant it is waking up and entering straight into the cold of the morning! More information about why we slept out below:
On November 18th, we slept out on the steps of Wellington Church in order to raise money and awareness for destitute asylum seekers. These are people who have either had their claims rejected or are in the process of appeal and have had all their support removed. They face a choice of suffering desperate poverty living on the streets in the UK or facing persecution, torture and death in the countries they fled.
Unity are planning to open a night shelter in November so that asylum seekers have somewhere safe and warm to stay and do not have to sleep rough this winter. The shelter will provide a warm evening meal and a place to stay during the night on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. It will be run in conjunction with other shelters so that asylum seekers will have somewhere safe and welcoming to stay all week. The money we raise from the sleep out will be given to Unity to help get this programme off the ground. Some money will also be donated to the Unity Cafe, which provides destitute asylum seekers with food.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer.
