Flora London Marathon 2009 · 26 April 2009 ·

Every day 250 people in the UK start losing their sight. With your help, we can be there when people need us most, support independent living, create an inclusive society and prevent avoidable sight loss. Every pound you raise will help create a future where sight loss is no longer a barrier.

Story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.

On April 26 this year I will be taking part in the Flora London Marathon and attempting to run 26.2 miles. This is definitely not as easy as it sounds. Especially, as some of you may have already spotted, I was built for comfort rather than speed and definitely not for long distance running. I have actually run 1 marathon before. 10 years ago, I completed the New York Marathon. So in theory, with 10 years more "experience", this one should easy!

The charity I'll be trying to raise money for is the RNIB, the Royal National Institute for the Blind. Whilst it would be wrong to say that one charity is more worthy than another, I'll admit that the RNIB is certainly less exotic than some. However, it does have some personal significance to me. About 3.5 years ago, my wife Suzie went blind. At first the doctors thought it would just be temporary, however it was soon clear that the loss would be permanent. As with so many things in life, you really don't know what you've got till it's gone. Whilst there's the big things such as driving that suddenly become impossible, it's actually the everyday mundane tasks that are more difficult to handle. Things like cooking, watching tv, checking email, playing sports and even telling the time suddenly become extremely difficult. This is where the RNIB came in. Whilst we knew there was no hope in getting Suzie's vision back, we didn't realise that she could still lead a normal, active life. The RNIB were amazing in helping Suzie get round all these problems. Even though each little problem had a simple solution, for example, Suzie now has a watch that speaks out the time when she presses a button, it was the support provided by the RNIB that was so invaluable. Nowadays, Suzie leads a virtually normal life and even though she is blind, still manages to dress better than I do!

The money I'm trying to raise will not help Suzie, but will go towards helping the 100 people a day in Britain who start to lose their sight. I know that in the current financial climate, giving to charity is often the last thing on people's minds, but if you are able to help, no matter how small, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: RNIB gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

Thanks once again.
