SOMETHING I NEVER DREAMT I WOULD DO!
I have been actively involved with St Wilfrids Hospice for the last 6 months, shortly before my wife Carole was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The hospice has supported both of us in many different ways, and I decided I wanted to join the trek as a way of helping to raise money for this great cause.
Carole has had two spells as an inpatient at the hospice for palliative care, and the support and care given have been tremendous. However the hospice is only able to provide inpatient treatment for 1 in 4 of the local community who need its services. We hope that money raised from this trek will help maintain, if not improve this.
The Hospice is a local charity which set up 25 years ago to care for people over 18 with life-limiting illnesses. Services currently include a 10 bed in-patient unit, a day therapy clinic, Hospice at Home care, bereavement counselling, complementary therapies and a specialist lymphoedema clinic.
We'll be trekking for 8 days in extreme temperatures ranging between 24 degrees celsius during the day, to -2 degrees celsius at night, and start the trek with a 16km (10 miles) descent into the canyon to reach base camp!
Carole passed away on the 2nd May, after a courageous battle with her disease, and so this challenge is even more important to me now!
