Topman have stopped selling this t-shirt which appears to be making a joke of the excuses perpetrators use for the serious domestic violence they commit. Thank you to Topman. Let's continue to take a stand against perpetrator excusing messages by donating to prevention projects.
This kind of t-shirt is contributing to a culture which thinks domestic abuse is not a big deal.
Tender Education & Arts work to end the domestic abuse that kills 100 women and 20 men in the UK each year and affects many more. Every day, Tender become more and more aware of the things survivors have to endure and are confronted with people sympathising with excuses such as 'he was provoked', 'he was drunk', 'he couldn't control himself'. Topman's design team obviously don't understand how prevalent and how damaging these excuses are and how often they are used against people who have experienced extreme violence. The psychological violence that goes alongside this kind of abuse leads to victims being manipulated into believing excuses like 'I was having a bad day' are acceptable.
There is no excuse for domestic abuse.
