About St Oswald's Hospice Limited

St Oswald’s provides hospice care for adults and children.

Situated in Gosforth, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, St Oswald’s purpose-built facilities offer a range of flexible services to North East families. St Oswald’s follows a holistic approach that aims to address not just physical symptoms, but also spiritual and emotional needs too.

We care for adults with life limiting illness such as Cancer and Motor Neurone Disease. Our wide range of services include an Inpatient Unit, Day Hospice, a Day Treatment Unit an Outpatient Clinic and Outreach.

We also offer specialist short breaks to North East children with progressive, life shortening conditions.

We provide specialist care for children, as well as support and advice for parents, within a relaxed, home-from-home environment. Families from across the region- Northumberland and Tyne &Wear – can benefit from our services. We are a registered charity. Our annual running costs exceed £4 million – of which £3 million must be raised through voluntary giving. We make no charge for any of our services, ensuring hospice care is available to everyone.

Our history

St Oswald's Hospice was founded in the early 1970s by Dorothy Jameson, a local lady who felt that north east people, facing terminal illness, ought to receive the same type of care and support offered by St Christopher's Hospice in London.

So, she set about spreading the idea of a local hospice, encouraging others to get involved, share the vision and ensure her plans came to fruition.

In 1982, Dorothy's committee launched an appeal to raise £2 million to build and run a local hospice. North east people gave their whole-hearted support to the project and the doors were opened in July 1986.
