Why your donation matters
Sumatran orangutans are critically endangered and without urgent action could be the first Great Ape species to become extinct. SOS is dedicated to turning this situation around.
We do this by:
1) Raising awareness about the importance of protecting orangutans and their rainforest home.
2) Supporting grassroots projects which empower local people to become guardians of the rainforests and restoring damaged orangutan habitat through tree planting programmes - we've already planted more than half a million trees!
3) Campaigning on issues threatening the survival of orangutans in the wild.
By making a donation or creating a fundraising page, you will be helping us to protect Sumatran orangutans, their forests and their future.
Thank you.
Case study: donations in action
SOS works to protect orangutans through a combination of community-led conservation, forest restoration, education and campaigning.
For example, we partner with local communities to restore damaged areas of the Gunung Leuser National Park, and protect the forest from further destruction. We have planted over half a million tree seedlings and we're delighted to report that wildlife is starting to return to the area! Orangutans, Sumatran elephants, pig-tailed macaques, leopard cats, porcupine, and lots of species of birds have all been spotted. Orangutans share the forest with a huge range of species.
Our team in Sumatra also help to rescue orangutans that have become stranded in farmlands, and return them to the national park. The spread of agriculture into precious forests is a major threat to orangutans - an issue we are also tackling through our vital campaign work.
Please support SOS today, and help us keep working for a brighter future for orangutans and their rainforests.
Help us work with the local people to protect and restore the orangutans' forest home
