WE MADE IT! 145km altogether - and not a blister in sight!
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT!!
Neither of us are known for our sporting achievements, but we do have a pair of working legs each and intend to put them to good use this September. Travelling to Samos in Galicia on 4 September 2009, we will set off to walk the last 140km of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, hopefully arriving there on 12 September.
Legend has it that the remains of St James were buried on the site of what is now the city of Santiago de Compostela. After a while, a shrine was established and making a pilgrimage to visit it became one of the most important Christian pilgrimages from the 9th Century onwards, as important as visiting Rome or Jerusalem. The Caminos de Santiago de Compostela are a collection of old routes to the city which have existed for over 1000 years. The Camino Frances (the French Way) runs along the top of Northern Spain and it is that route that we will be joining. It's a great route to hike, but for most people, the walk really means something. Suzie has been planning this for a few years now, as part of a personal and spiritual journey, and although she would have gone alone, Angela's decision to join her is very welcome - it will be wonderful to share this experience with a good friend.
We will be carrying everything we need with us, so we are keeping our packs to an 8kg maximum - this means we will have to deprive ourselves of our precious books (probably the hardest thing to do). We will be keeping our fingers crossed that there will be clean sheets and pillows where we stay, and hoping that there will not be too many bedbugs!
We will be raising money for the Alastair Ramsay Charitable Trust, a charity which will use money raised to support children across the world, lifting them out of poverty and appalling living conditions. For further details, see www.alastairramsay.net.
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor us: The Alastair Ramsay Charitable Trust gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
Many, many thanks from us both!
