I just wanted to make an addition to this page to say that I completed the distance! The swim began on Monday October 26th at 7am, and finished today (Tuesday) at 2pm. It took just over 11 hours in the water to swim the 22 miles and, despite having a very sore right arm and shoulder (I'm not sure why it's only the right arm that hurts!), I am happy to have completed the challenge. I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has donated so generously to Asthma UK, and a particular thanks to the families who came down to support me at the pool, and the pupils who swam with me! It was a huge motivation to swim faster!
It is fantastic to have raised so much money for Asthma UK and I know that the money is going to a worthwhile cause. Callum and his family have been very much at the forefront of my mind over the last 2 days. The incredible support that I have received from my colleagues and from everyone in the Brambletye community in the lead up to this swimathon has shown just how much Callum meant to the pupils and staff here at Brambletye. He is missed by everybody and will not be forgotten.
Thank you, once again.
Following the tragic death of a friend and colleague - Callum Tuckey - from a severe asthma attack at the start of this term, I wanted to do something to raise money for Asthma UK. My aim is to swim the distance of the English Channel - 22 miles (which is 1416 lengths of a 25m pool) in three days. Callum was an excellent swimmer, as well as being an amazing young man, and I would like to complete the challenge in memory of him.
5.4 million people in the UK are affected by asthma, and Asthma UK raises funds to support research into the condition - helping to understand its causes and develop more effective treatments. It is also a vital source of independent advice on asthma for healthcare professionals and for asthma sufferers.
