WHO WE ARE

SWVG is a group of around sixty volunteers who believe that everyone who is seeking sanctuary in the deserves respect and compassion and that applications for asylum should get a fair and proper hearing. We offer friendship, a sympathetic ear and practical support to those in the area who are experiencing particular difficulties. We can help in contacting a solicitor, finding accommodation, getting access to medical treatment and negotiating the complexities of the asylum system and where necessary financial support.

We raise our funds through a combination of fundraising events, grants from charitable trusts and the generosity of individuals, faith groups and NGO’s.

The majority of our funds are used for the ASSIST scheme which can provide room rents and £25 a week for those asylum seekers who are destitute or in need.

WHO WE HELP

SWVG helps asylum seekers and refugees to reduce isolation and promote their wellbeing. Many are mentally or physically scarred. They are referred to us by MP’s, doctors, Refugee Action, Red Cross, , the Homeless Health team and Social Services. Most come from countries where there is conflict, such as , , , , Democratic Republic of Congo and .

We particularly help those who have had their initial applications for asylum rejected by the UK Government and are making appeals, preparing fresh claims or have well founded fears of returning. In many cases the government is not returning those denied asylum to countries such as and .

Without the right to work or benefits they are made effectively destitute.

Despite this adversity, the majority of men and women we visit display remarkable courage and resilience.

WHY WE NEED THE MONEY

Many of the asylum seekers we work with are desitute. This means an individual has no financial or practical means of support; some individuals are very hungry when they come to us.

In response to this situation, SWVG set up the ASSIST Scheme.  We provide temporary accommodation and basic subsistence of £25 per week. At the present time, we are providing this to about 25 of the most vulnerable asylum seekers we know. The situation of each individual is carefully assessed, and we help clients to obtain any other support.   Many are women, some with small children, and individuals who have mental or physical health problems.

Your financial support will be invaluable.  We can promise that it will be carefully used by us, but even more important, your help will be deeply appreciated by the individuals who benefit.
