When Syd Barrett left London and returned home to Cambridge in the early eighties, he decided he’d walk all the way – a story which has become a popular psychedelic tale.

Thirty years on a group of Syd Barrett fans and those associated with the charity Escape Artists who the Syd Barrett Fund supports, will make a similar journey, all in the name of supporting disadvantaged people access the arts as a means of improving wellbeing, confidence, skills and employability.

No one knows the exact route Syd took, the one we’ve chosen covers a distance just short of 60 miles, which will take three days to complete.

We will begin at the Camden Roundhouse, a venue Pink Floyd famously played with Syd Barrett (and where his sister Rosemary who founded the Syd Barrett Fund has good memories of seeing the band), and finish in the centre of Cambridge, having passed by Byron’s Pool, a favourite spot of Syd’s both in his childhood and in later life.

The team is made up of experienced walkers and those for whom this is a real step into the unknown.

60 miles is a long way in anyone’s book, so your support through this page will give those walking a real lift, as well as maintaining Syd Barrett’s legacy and in his memory, helping those who’s standard of wellbeing can benefit from the arts in the same way that Syd did through the work of Escape Artists.
