Team Shika - Kili Climb 2013

Team photo

Thanks for visiting our team fundraising page.

On 2nd February 2013, Michelle Parlett, Rob Corbett, Dr David Steel, Anna Chard, Chris Evans, Neal Granville and Silje Einerkjaer will embark on the hike of a lifetime.  They will trek 5895 metres to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of Shika.  Shika is a British charity that provides educational support to 90 orphaned and vulnerable children, who live in view of Mount Kilimanjaro itself, in the nearby city of Arusha.

We are doing it not because we love being cold, (much of the climb will involve trekking in sub zero temperatures), feeling sick (lack of oxygen at such high altitudes may result in altitude sickness), or tired (hill walking up to 15 hours in a day), but because we want to help Shika to continue to provide education and support to some of the poorest children in Tanzania.

The team will be led myself, Michelle, the Founder & Director of Shika.  We are keen to show the climbers what a massive difference the money they raise will make to the children in our programmes.  The whole team will get the opportunity to see this for themselves on day one of the trip when we travel to Arusha to visit the children at our after school programme.  We will undoubtedly be motivated by the children’s own strength & determination in the face of the tough conditions of their lives.  A seven day hike up the world’s tallest free standing mountain while battling altitude sickness, should seem a temporary inconvenience knowing the  how much good the money raised will do.

The proceeds from the climb will support the Shika after school programme which provides our most vulnerable children with an educational support programme consisting of nutrition, extra tuition, counseling and emotional support, life skills and group activities.

We can promise you climbing Kili will be no mean feat for us.  There is no guarantee that we will all summit…  however we will do our best.  We have to.

We want to reassure you that we are not doing this out of some desire to climb Kilimanjaro on the cheap.  We are self-funding this trip, so any sponsorship money raised will go directly to the project.  If you could encourage us by donating whatever you can afford to support our effort, it will make all the pain worth it.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never share them with anyone or send you unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. They'll make sure Gift Aid (an additional 28%) is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer, too. That means more money goes to the charity, faster, with JustGiving.

So please dig deep and donate now.
