On 18th April 2014 at 2pm the National Museum of the Royal Navy will be holding a charity abseil at the Spinnaker Tower, Portsmouth, to help raise funds our new HMS-Hear My Story Galleries and as part of our Public Appeal. Set to open in May this year, HMS - Hear My Story is a major exhibition situated in the brand new Babcock Galleries, and will tell the undiscovered stories from the men and women who have made the Royal Navy’s history over the last century.
The Public Appeal is the culmination of the fundraising activity which has been taking place over the last year and invites the local Portsmouth community and NMRN supporters to play a vital part in preserving the national naval heritage. We hope to raise £20,000, with this adrenaline fuelled challenge helping us reach our target and with the opening of the new Galleries fast approaching reaching our target is vital. At present Vice Admiral Sir Anthony Dymock KBE CB, the appeal’s Chairman, has courageously volunteered to abseil the 170 meters down the Spinnaker Tower. Vice Admiral David Steel CBE, Second Sea Lord, has also bravely volunteering to soar down the tower that overlooks Portsmouth Naval Base. The third and final fundraiser will be announced on Social Media soon, so please keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter!
It promises to be a spectacular event, so if you can, come down and watch the event take place! There will be plenty of NMRN staff on hand to chat to and answer any questions you may have about the Museum and our upcoming projects.
