On Saturday 2nd July The Reading & West Berkshire branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association held a sponsored  cycling challenge event at Palmer Park Stadium, Reading. This event was in memory of Brian Haines and to raise funds for the branch. All funds raised will be used directly to support local people living with MND.

Our 23 strong team consisting of people living with MND and able bodied supporters cycled around Palmer Park’s Velodrome and.athletics tracks. Five disabled riders rode adapted trikes. We covered 290 miles (total) in under 2 hours with all riders reaching or exceeding their individual targets. They kept the 7 lap counters very busy. 3 spectators even joined in as guest riders including a toddler who did one lap on his scooter.

Brian Haines had a real passion for cycling and his inspirational attitude raised MND awareness when he won The Reading Disabled Sports Personality of The Year Award (see picture) just ten days before losing his battle with MND in January. Even after Brian was no longer able to ride any of his collection of nine bikes, he joined CTC’s disabled cycling group and his joy was clear for all to see when he was able to ride again using specially adapted adult trikes around Palmer Park  Stadium.

This is a great cause so please sponsor us.

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. As the cells die off, messages to muscles are lost, causing the muscles to weaken and waste. MND is fatal,  life expectency is just 2 to 5 years and it affects mobility, speech, swallowing, and ultimately breathing.  There is no known cure!

Brian was a good friend of mine and very popular. I am one of the luckier ones having survived with MND for nine years from diagnosis.

Thank you for taking the time to read this page.
