We've joined together to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK in memory of a dear friend Steve Garbett, who sadly passed away in November 2014. It was one of his wishes to help other Prostate Cancer sufferers, so a group of family and friends teamed up to make that wish come true by raising as much as we physically can to help those in need.
Team Garby completed the London to Amsterdam ride in 2015 and raised £42,140 and in June 2016, Team Garby completed the Barnsley to Amsterdam ride raising £19,879 making £62,019 in total. Our target has been that over the weekend of June 9/10/11, 2017, Team Garby riders will raise the £37,981 needed to achieve £100,000 in three years.
Lots of the team have helped with different fundraising events and ideas culminating in a gala dinner at the Queens Hotel in Leeds on
Saturday March 18, organised by Simon Grayson and his partner.
Over 400 people attended the black tie event headlined by the Kaiser Chiefs who donated their services free of charge. The event was so successful we have smashed our target of £100,000. It is testament to how well Steve Garbett was thought of that so many attended the dinner and raised so much money. His widow Sue and son David were present at the dinner and were so proud that so many donated so much for this wonderful cause.
Team Garby's next event was another cycle, comprising of 26 riders wore the now infamous ‘sausage’ cycle tops on day 1, sponsored by a range of businesses, but especially Heck Foods.
Since then, in 2018 Luke Hemmings cycled from John O'Groats to Lands End then ran from Lands End to Dover! Assisted by another charity gala, Luke raised a phenominal £30,000, taking the TeamGarby pot to over £174,00!
2018 also saw the launch (live on BBC Look North) of Bedale AFC new "hot dog" kit, sponsored again by Heck Foods. This has gained publicity via TV, Radio, Newspaper and Websites.
All this has seen us (TeamGarby) increase our target to £250,000!
Together with endorsements from famous people in the sporting and entertainment world, we are confident the quarter of a million-pound target is achievable.
