Story

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page. Simon & Debbie along with Jack & Alice have decided to spend their summer holidays this year with Sarah & Andrew  for a cycling break which quickly turned into the Lands End to John O'Groats challenge. It would be most people’s idea of a nightmare holiday!

Why exactly are we doing this mad thing? To raise money for a much needed mini-bus for a disabled centre in South Africa. Well if you are going to do it you might as well do it for a good cause!
The Tecford Centre is a community project in the township of Jouberton in the North West Province of South Africa. It is an enablement centre for the disabled, for both mentally and physically disabled. It offers places for some 60 or so local people to come together and learn basic skills in sewing, wood and metal work. Sadly so many disabled in South Africa are  seen as a burden to their families and are often isolated in their homes and communities so to meet and have contact with people in similar situations as themselves can be life changing, to have the opportunity to learn skills to support themselves and their families is truly liberating. The centre also offers recreation opportunities of wheel chair basketball and they have a locally renowned choir.
Supporters from Devon have been fundraising for the Centre over the last 10 years and have in that time been able to raise money to buy a mini-bus, sewing, wood and metal work equipment, all of which have been vital to the running of the Centre.
Both Sarah and Andy  have been to visit the Centre several times over the years and have seen this Centre go from strength to strength. Sarah most recently visited in October 2007 and discovered that the bus that they had help fund nearly 10 years ago is pretty much on its last legs and costing quite a bit to just keep on the road each month.
The bus has been used to transport the people to and from the centre every day, supplies and stock need to be collected and orders delivered from both the sewing and metal workshops to keep the Centre going. The mini bus is also used to transport the wheelchair basketball team to matches at the weekends.
Estimates are that a new specially modified bus will cost in the region of £30,000, a hugh amount to raise, we are looking to try and raise just £10,000 encouraging the Centre to try and raise match funding from within South Africa. They already have about £6,000 saved themselves for the new bus. .
Please give generously, whatever the amount it will be appreciated by so many.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Bishop Simeon Trust will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
