My name is Simon Jermy and I'm founder of The Conch, the online community for adventurous people.
I love trying out new adventure sports. So when a colleague dared me to attempt 50 adventure sports in 50 hours, I jumped at the chance. The 50:50 Challenge was born, in aid of Cancer Research UK.
In December 2008 my Nan died, not from the cancer she had kept hidden for so many years but from the series of infections and deterioration of her health that the cancer started. She always encouraged me to live my own life, to be different and to be ambitious. The Conch wouldn't exist if it weren't for her. This is my way of saying thank you.
Please do give what you can. Here are just a few things your money could be spent on:
£10 - 300 glass slides for studying cells and tumour samples in detail under the microscope.
£30 - 250 plastic petri dishes. They're an essential resource for thousands of scientists who are working hard to understand cancer.
£475 - 10 pairs of cryogenic gloves, worn when retrieving very cold samples from a -80ºC freezer or a liquid nitrogen storage tank
£1,000 - 2 month's running costs for a clinical trial investigating a new way of giving hormone therapy to improve the treatment of prostate cancer.
The 50:50 Challenge is going to be hard and to be honest, I'm a bit scared. That said, it's nothing compared to what my Nan went through and what so many in this country continue to battle against. Let's help give them a fighting chance.
