Sorry to sound so rude, but for one of our 2011 projects, this description hits it on the head and I bet it grabbed your attention too.
We want to install a biogas cooking system at Ilongero Secondary School so that students may be fed at least 1 meal in the course of the day.
Most of the 1000 students at Ilongero Secondary School in Tanzania start the long walk to school early in the morning on an empty stomach and have to wait until home time to eat as there are no cooking facilities at the school. Results: poor concentration, fragile health and academic under achievement. Running a kitchen using wood and charcoal is costly, unhealthy and bad for the environment especially deforestation. The area already suffers from deforestation but has no alternative fuel resources.
A biogas system produces gas for cooking using human, animal or vegetable waste. This means that it becomes feasible to run a kitchen at almost not cost to the environment or to the students as far as energy is concerned. The school will use mainly human waste (only the kind that fills school latrines, of course!). The by-product, slurry, can then be converted into a rich fertilizer for a school garden to produce raw food.
Nutritious and plentiful food is essential for growing bodies and minds to function at their optimum. Properly educated youngsters will help build the skilled workforce that Tanzania so badly needs to rid itself of poverty.
A biogas plant lasts for up to 20 years. We calculated that the biogas cost contribution to a meal will be approximately 2p, less than a meal cooked using wood. Its contribution to the environment and global warming is invaluable.
We need your help to raise the £10K it will cost. If anything, our project title could lead to all sorts of fundraising activities. And no we wouldn’t quite go as far as……… to raise money, but don’t let us stop you!!
